Ashley's High School Graduation-May 27, 2011

How did this happen? Graduation 2011

Ashley and Kassidy Dunford-they played tennis together. I hope that they can stay friends. Kassidy is a sweet girl.

Ashley and the Visage family. They have loved Ashley since they were tiny.

Our little girl--just amazed that these things happen. It is strange to think we have a graduate, it doesn't seem like that long ago we were there ourselves.! So proud of Ashley!

Ashley and Grandma Dalley. She had three graduations in two states in five days! Grandma and Poppa Carrigan were there as well but got away before pictures.

Britney and Ashley-they have been friends since they were three years old. Other friends have come and gone but these two always seem to return to each other.

Many of the graduates decorate their caps. We will have silver glitter in our garage for years!!

Every graduate shook Principal Murdock's hand and handed him a marble-his jacket was heavy, heavy by the end!

School Board Member Neil Carrigan with the graduates.

Next Up--College!

Justin's Swimming lessons

Justin finally started to love the water! He has always been quite nervous and hesitant. He just loved his lessons. He was so excited when he looked up and I was taking a picture. He would say "watch this Mom!!" Such a sweet boy!

Temple Square Visit

Temple Square in Spring time!!
Tina and I have wanted to go to Temple square in the spring for years and years. Life keeps getting in the way. This year we finally figured out a time. Luckily for us Spring was late arriving so we were blessed with the most beautiful spring flowers in years!

The flowers are absolutely amazing! There wasn't a spot that wasn't covered in some glorious peace of beauty.

There is always a lovely feeling that exists on Temple square. I am grateful that we got to have such a lovely, lovely day!

Mommy and Me Makeover!

I got to go have a special "make-over" with Justin in Kindergarten! He painted my nails-and toenails! Four different colors! He also did my hair and then did my makeup! He took it very seriously!

It was fun to send time with Justin-letting him do whatever he thought looked good.

This is Emily's makeover for Justin! Making him a little cowboy!! I am glad that they used washable marker!!!

Dancing at Lagoon

Justin at the Zoo-Kindergarten field trip

Getting bigger by the day!!

We got to go to the Hogle Zoo for the kindergarten field trip! I am so glad that I got to go along!
We had a darling little group.

The giraffes are always a favorite!

Kindergartner's at the zoo--so sweet and silly! I am glad that I got to go along on the bus with them. It is always noisy, noisy but they are just so cute. I hope that he continues to like me to come along for awhile longer!

Justin's Pop Party

Justin got to have a special night with his Dad! The annual Pop's party! These pictures came from the earlier performance. Justin was so excited to have his Dad come to his classroom, eat dinner and sing his songs. It was a busy busy night-first he had swimming lessons, lost his suit pants somewhere-so Dad had to bring him home to change clothes. After dinner and the singing they hurried quickly to Morgan for baseball. Lots and lots to do!

Dave's New Church Calling

In January or February Dave started waking up in the middle of the night.  He would be awake for an hour or two.  It happened over and over again.  He would get up and sit in his chair and read his scriptures or another book until he was sleepy again.

One morning he said, "Something is coming."  "I am getting a new calling or something but I have no idea what it is."  I told him he would do great whatever it was and then I started praying, a lot.

Dave had been having a lot of shoulder pain since the fall.  It had gotten bad enough that he started talking about it to other people.  I tried to get him to go to the chiropractor, doctor, someone.  His scout buddy told him it sounded like a pinched nerve in his neck.   So, he went to the chiropractor.  That gave him some relief but not enough.  His fingers were getting tingly and the pain was constant.  The Chiropractor felt he better go to a specialist.  He finally did in December.  They did the MRI and found lots of things wrong in there.  Bone spurs, poor curvature, three bulging disks.  They wanted to do a cortisone shot immediately.  Dave had the shot and it worked for two days and then it did nothing.   The doctor wanted to schedule immediate surgery.  This is a scary surgery.  Dave balked.  He didn't go back to the Dr. or the chiropractor.  The Chiropractor felt that he could help him but Dave wasn't talking to anyone. This is when I started praying.

I started praying that Dave would be able to get the help that he needed so that he could serve anywhere they Lord wanted him.  I know my husband.  He loves serving The Lord.  However, I knew that he needed help to be able to do that.  I prayed and prayed that he would find some relief.  Generally, if a cortisone shot doesn't help within ten days it isn't going to help.  Dave was way past that time frame.  However, about the middle to end of February he started to have less pain.  Then the pain was gone completely.  He could feel it in certain positions but it was not a constant thing.

His sleep was still erratic.  He was aware that the Stake Presidency in the Young Single Adult Stake(LDS church) was going to be reorganized.  He served as a Bishop in that stake.  He still kept having the feeling that a new calling was coming but nothing more.

At the beginning of April people started talking about the reorganization of the Stake Presidency. I guess that the outgoing President is asked to request worthy men from the stake that could possibly serve.  They are then interviewed and then chosen.

Paul Barnes served with Dave as his counselor.  He asked Dave if he had been called about his appointment.  He had not.  Dave Prete also served with Dave.  Both of these men were still currently serving in the stake.  Dave had been released over a year ago.   Prete asked if he had his appointment?  Dave said no.

One Friday in early April, Dave left early for work.  He called me and told me he had to buy a suit.  I said "ok, why?"   He needed a new suit, his suit he used while Bishop was totally worn out.  However, he hadn't wanted to spend the money.  He just wore his white shirt.   He said that while he was awake in the night a voice told him to "go and buy a suit."   So, he decided he better do it.  I agreed.

The next weekend was the weekend that the new Presidency would be called.  Paul and Dave Prete kept calling Dave to ask if he had an appointment.  He didn't.   Thursday evening Dave received a call from Brother Dayley setting up an appointment.  Dave was shocked.  His appointment was for 11:30 Saturday morning.  I picked up Dave's suit on Friday night!

Unbeknownst to us until a few weeks later was this story.  Dave Prete had taken President Neilsen(current Stake President) to lunch to thank him for everything he had done, all the guidance for him as a Bishop etc.   While they were at lunch Dave Prete asked President Neilsen if Carrigan was on the interview list.  Pres. Neilsen said no.   Dave Prete looked at him and said "I think he should be."   Prete told us that President Neilsen just looked at him and didn't say anything for a long time.  Long enough that it was obvious he was really pondering what he had said.  Then President Neilsen said "your right, he needs to be on the list."    My sweet Dave was the last person to be added to the interview list.

Saturday morning came and Dave left for his interview.  All hell broke lose at my house.  My children were fighting viciously.  It was one of those times that I could not deal with the horrible feelings.  I called Dave and left a message to hurry and come home.  His interview had to be finished, it was 1:30p.m.!   A few days later I realized that the horrible awful feeling that were happening in our home at that very time was exactly like the awful feelings that were there immediately before Dave was sustained as Bishop.  The Devil wanted to stop the things that were happening, even going after our family.

Dave finally called and said that they were terribly behind schedule but he would be home as soon as possible.    He finally went in for his interview with Elder Richard Hinckley(President Hinkley's son) and Elder Charrington.   He said it was a wonderful interview.  They were both so interested in him and his family.   Where he grew up, his mission, his marriage.  He left the interview feeling like old friends.

Dave came home and told me about the interview.  He said it was a wonderful experience.  About ten minutes later Paul Barnes came over.  His interview had been a bit before Dave's.  He said that his interview was short and to the point.  He said it was the most "nothing" interview he has ever had.

Dave and I looked at the time.  We knew that they had to have the new President called by 4:00 so that he could choose and call counselors.   We both starting doing projects.  I worked on laundry in the basement while Dave worked under the boat.   Our basement phone doesn't have caller ID so I rarely answer it.  While I was in the laundry room the phone rang.  I knew I had to answer it.  As I answered it I looked at the clock-3:55.   I said hello.  Brother Dayley asked if Bishop Carrigan was available.   I took the cordless phone outside and said to Dave  "Dave, you are wanted on the phone"   He said, "who is it?"   I said, "you don't want to know!"   He got out from under the boat and took the call.   Brother Dayley asked if he could bring me and his bride down that evening.  He then called right back and they changed the time to 7:30 am.    Dave looked at me with a shocked knowing face.

Neither of us slept at all that night.  We had talked about if he was the President.  Who would he call as counselors.   When we got up we both absolutely knew that he wasn't the President, he was a counselor.  We went into the stake offices and Bishop Lyle Parry and his wife were sitting there.  Within a few minutes another man walked in.  Neither Dave nor Lyle knew him. We all knew he was the new Stake President. We went into the interview and visited with Elder Hinkley and Elder Charrington.  They asked questions and then asked Dave if he was worthy and willing to serve.  They asked me if I would support him.  They also asked if there were any legal matters, or lawsuits that we were involved with that they should be aware of. It was a very humbling experience. We then had a few short minutes that we met with all six of us.  The Presidency and their wives.  President Tony Reynolds had never met either of his counselors.  I asked how he chose them.   He said that Elder Hinkley had given him a folder with a few of their recommendations and then they had a half an hour to pray about about who to choose.  He and his wife Connie felt directed and guided with the choices they made.  We had about an hour to go home and get our families ready to be with us at Stake Conference.

As we sat down in the audience waiting for the sustaining of the new Presidency I looked around.  It was such a surreal experience.  There were many people there that we knew.  Many were there to support the outgoing Presidency.  I don't know if we looked different because we had our family with us.  I just know that I was so nervous sitting there waiting.  The release and then the new sustaining happened.  Just like that, the mantel was shifted.

The members of the leaving Presidency spoke as did their wives.   It was very emotional.  It was then the new Stake Presidency's turn. I remember very clearly that I expressed that I knew that my prayers had been answered by Dave's neck/shoulder pain going away so that he was able to serve.  I know that it was through the power of the Lord.  I told them  that I was grateful for a husband that was always willing to serve the Lord.

After the meeting there was a short meet and greet with stake members and then we had a luncheon with the new Presidency and Elder Hinkley and Charrington.  It was a lovely luncheon.  The beginning of a five year calling that would change our lives!

Be patient! I am going to be adding a ton of posts in the next few days. I am going to be making a post but not necessarily finishing the post. I want to save a place for things that have happened during this past summer. I want them to be relatively chronological. I am going to try and give each one I want to post about a spot-but it will take awhile to fill them all in with pictures. After I make a post for them all I will begin to post(hopefully) more often.

Missing In Action

For numerous reasons I have been MIA from this space. I think about it alot. Mainly because I don't really have any other journal or scrapbook besides this one. This is where I have mainly recorded my family's happenings for the last five years. I really want to maintain this spot so that I don't lose many of the little things that happen in our lives.

I am going to try and do better. I am hoping to figure out how to also post here from my iphone(i have an iphone now!). That way on occasion when I just can't spend the time at the computer I might be able to jot some thoughts down while waiting for my kids.

We have had lots and lots and lots of things happen since April. I have a list--I am going to start where I am in life now and then as I can backtrack and add the things that I have missed. I hope I can make some progress!

Mt. Washmore

I have a !horrible relationship with laundry. A few years ago we moved the machines from right off the kitchen to the basement. It has been good and bad.

I wanted them moved because the little hall was too little so the laundry was always overflowing into the kitchen. I also was never away from it.

Having it in the basement has helped the kitchen mess a ton. However, it is now so easy to avoid going downstairs to work on it.

I wish I were one of those people that just always did a load or two a day. From start to finish.

I am not. I am 42 years old and laundry still makes me crazy. I

Digging out

Seems like I have been sleeping for five months! Everywhere I look is dirty!

I am hoping that I get a serious boost and it starts to feel less chaotic!

Ashley's Near Death Experience

Ashley about died. No really--she is a lucky lucky girl. She and Mitch decided to go try out the new long board that Mitch made in shop. The road by our house is too rocky so they went over by our new school. The roads are new and smooth. They are also mostly hills. Bigger than they look.

Ashley crashed going probably 30-35 miles per hour. Mitch was behind her in the car. Of course there was no helmet. Mitch said that she just laid there. I am certain that she was knocked unconscious. Mitch got her in the car and drove her home. I did not know what to do. She was a screaming mess. At first I didn't really realize how badly she had crashed. I didn't know that she laid there. I didn't understand that her hysteria was a concussion.

This was a very scary night. Hind sight is very clear and we should have taken her in earlier. When I did take her in the Dr. told her that she was a very lucky girl. There are many fatalities on long boards. Fatal head injuries. She was lucky she didn't break her skull.

She had a cat scan and was clear from bleeds or fractures so that was good. However, with a serious concussion it could take weeks to really heal.

These pictures are five days after the accident. She wouldn't let me near her with a camera before that! She also suffered from bad road rash. Both elbows, both knees, hands and her hip. Her hip is the most painful.

I hope that someday Ashley has the ability to look at this accident and realize that she was spared. Spared death and spared from permanent brain injury. She experienced a miracle. We believe in the Power of the Priesthood. I know that the blessing her Dad gave her helped. She had faith. She must have a reason that she was spared. I just hope that she will be a bit more cautious and realize that she can get hurt. A helmet would be a great idea!

Little Sahara Sanddunes-April

We went to the Sanddunes (Little Sahara in Utah)at the beginning of April.

We went with some friends who all have kids who love to ride dirt bikes. Mitch and Justin had a ball! Me--I about froze to death! I am not a cold weather lover! I kept trying to go out and visit around the fire and I just couldn't do it! When there is a heater inside I just struggle wanting to go outside!!!

Our friend Kathy brought a little 50 dirt bike. Justin was in heaven. He rode and rode. He crashed a few times as well! We threatened the older boys with death if they showed the little guys how to shift! We figured that they needed to learn how to ride and balance before they were allowed speed!

Mitch is a total dare devil. It scares me to death to watch him! He is on his dirt bike going up "sand mountain" like it is a walk in the park! He loves to ride! Makes me wonder where he came from! My brothers are big dirtbikers but they scare me to death!! He did have one really gnarly crash-so I was told. I am glad I didn't have to watch it-no need to fuel my fear!!!

On Saturday night it started to rain. When we got up it had snowed. We were in trouble! It was a sticky mucky mess. There was no way that we would be able to get our motorhome out until it dried out. We were with another motorhome and a big trailer. We sent all the teenagers home in the available car and stayed an extra night. Monday morning we were finally able to get out without getting the beast stuck!

(i didn't take many pictures-I will try to get some from Kathy)

Prom 2010-March 12

Prom-2010

We had to finish the dance competition in Idaho and HURRY home so that we could get Ashley to the prom. At our school the Junior Prom(yes Ashley is a senior-date was a junior) is a HUGE deal! They have what they call a Promenade where all the couples are presented on stage and their names are read along with their parents names. The whole town turns out to Promenade!

We barely made it in time!

Ashley went with Zac Welsh this year. They were a cute couple. Funny thing-the Welsh's lived in our ward when we lived in Ogden. Ashley and Zac knew each other as little kids! They don't remember this but it is funny how we all moved around and now they date!!

As always Ashley looked beautiful.

Always a daddy's girl!

March Dance Competition-Pocatello

A bit of a catch up!

We went to Idaho State Dance Championships in March so Emily could compete in her clogging/powertap.

She is on two teams this year. She is getting quite good. It is always so nuts at a competition to get there with all the hair pieces, clothing articles, makeup, shoes etc. Then while at the competition to be on the right stage at the right times!

Em's teams did super earning first on all dances and also receiving an Overall which is the highest award given!

Where are you Spring?

wow-another month without posting. It has still been winter. Winter steals my soul. It steals my energy and it steals my interest and desire.

I went outside the other day looking for spring. I just know that it has to be coming. The snow is melting. The robins are returning. I have seen Canandian Geese resting on their way back home. I know that real spring has to just be hiding around the corner.

I found my little crocus flowers! They are the sweetest little flowers that had to have been created just for people like me. People that need Spring.

Hopefully, now that I have found my little spring crocus I will be able to emerge from this winter swampland.
